Oiran were the beautiful and educated courtesans of Edo, the capital of the Japanses Shogun; the city which is now called Tokyo. In her feature film Sakuran, the filmmaker and artist Mika Ninagawa depicts the life of a young prostitute who becomes a megastar at the pinnacle of the Oiran.
